Canadians catch Black Friday fever

It's the unofficial launch of the Christmas shopping season in the United States - their equivalent of Boxing Day, only everybody's still got money and stamina.

Black Friday is THE day to get a deal. Many retailers open their doors early and don't close until late at night - offering extra incentives to bleary-eyed early birds who start lining up long before the crack of dawn, ready to jostle, shove and race for limited quantities of drastically reduced items, especially clothing, electronics and toys.

Its also a benefit to not have to pay a subscription service to use this feature.

Re: the future being download content. For HD content no. Thats why it has blu ray. Xbox doesn't have anything like this as it doest have a portable device or let you access the REAL internet.

World's finest tech sites immortalised

They may have transformed man's understanding of the universe but the monumental impact of the world's first large radio telescope and the planet's largest particle physics lab has never been fully recognised.

Now both Jodrell Bank and Cern are among the technological landmarks that could be immortalised alongside the pyramids of Egypt and Taj Mahal on Unesco's World Heritage Site (WHS) list.

The UK National Commission for Unesco and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport are hosting a three-day workshop to set the framework for creating future World Heritage Sites that mark advances in science and technology.

Experts on the history of science and world heritage from 15 countries are taking part in the London-based sessions to create the framework, which is expected to stimulate a surge in the number of science and technology heritage sites across the world.

Knox gains tourism revenue

Knox County draws more than $700 million from tourism each year, ranking it fourth among Tennessee counties, according to City of Knoxville officials.

Steve Morse, an economist and director of UT's Tourism Institute, said revenue will be in the billions within 10 years.

“Usually people in a college town think of fun things to do everywhere but a college town," Morse said. “Fun things to a college student is to go to the Strip, go to the Old City, go to football and sporting events, and that's about it. But there are a whole lot more things that are here in Knoxville."

Statistics provided by Morse reveal that Knoxville's revenue from tourists has been steadily increasing by $42.5 million per year from 2002 to 2006.

Erin Burns Freeman, director of communications for Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation, said the growth of the downtown area has enhanced the growth of the tourism revenue.

COLUMN: Universal health care: There are better solutions

There use to be a time when one could afford to make a simple trip to the doctor without using an insurance card. This was before the government decided it was better suited to be in charge of your health care than you were, back in the 1960s with the establishment of Medicaid and Medicare.

The years that followed would bring many tax laws into place, forcing businesses to provide health care options and turning the system into managed care, which, in turn, brought drug companies and lobbyist groups to Washington, throwing millions of dollars into the system for their corporate interests rather than people. This has taken away power from the people and doctors and given it to large corporate interests. Prices continue to increase because when the government or third parties are paying the bills rather than the individual, the hospitals and doctors charge top dollar for their services.
