Storm worm continues its rampage

The body of the message contains a text link leading to a web page advertising an online 'greeting card' supposedly sent to the user.

On clicking either the image or the link, the user downloads an executable file that installs the Storm malware.

Infected machines are then connected to a customised peer-to-peer network which is used to control the botnet and install new versions of the worm.

This malware connects the user to Storm's huge botnet, which has been linked to spam runs and phishing attacks, and is said to be among the greatest threats on the internet.

As Storm's run nears 14 months, security companies are stepping up their efforts to slow the worm.

ThreatStop has made its normally private list of blocked Storm domains available to the general public, allowing users to copy the list and use it with firewall software to block traffic from known Storm distributors.

Silverlight helps bring streaming video to Olympics Web site

How would you like to be handed this IT project: create a website that will present 2,200 hours of live, interactive video, plus integrated broadcast coverage. The site will have huge spikes of traffic, and operate under worldwide scrutiny, so it has to be designed for performance. It has to be done in the next 150 days; no schedule extensions are possible. And it must deliver a brilliant user experience.

That's the job in front of the developers for the Summer Olympics website, which also will offer expert commentary and sports biographies and permit users to share links to favorite event videos. During the MIX 08 keynote address on Wednesday, Perkins Miller, senior vice president of digital media for NBC Sports & Olympics, said that this was "the most ambitious online project."

During the Olympics, the site (demonstrated in prototype form during the keynote) will deliver video interactively for 17 days.

For Those of You Who Check Bags When Flying [ David Freddoso ]

Today, US Airways announced a change to our baggage policy. Beginning May 5, 2008, we’ll charge $25 for a second checked bag. The new fee applies to travel on or after May 5 for tickets purchased on or after February 26, 2008.

I haven't checked a bag in years — even for long and international trips — because the airlines always find a way to lose them. (When I went to Iowa earlier this year, they took and nearly "lost" my carry-on bag — long story). So if you like to travel heavy, I'm sorry that I won't be paying for you anymore.

N.Y. factory index declines

At 4.19, the future employment index also fell to its lowest level since October 2001.

February's order, shipment and employment index plunges sent New York's manufacturing sector back to where it stood near the end of the nation's last recession. The 2001 recession started in March and lasted eight months.

Technically, a recession is when the gross domestic product exhibits two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The nation posted a 0.6 percent GDP increase for the fourth quarter of 2007. Global Insight, a Lexington, Mass. economic research firm, recently declared that the nation has entered into a recession.

“The fact is New York does worse in a recession [than the nation], and this is an example of that," said David Shaffer, a spokesman for the Business Council of New York State, an Albany trade organization.

WATER POLO

Water polo is now an established sport played throughout the world but it has a long history which began in England. The first documented evidence of the game was when the Bournemouth Premier Rowing Club carried out the "first series" of aquatic handball matches" on 13 July 1876.

Various ball games had been played in the water before this time, the most common seems to have been a type of polo in which the swimmer "rode" an inflated skin or barrel, propelling the ball with the hands or a form of paddle and moving about by using the feet. These games were probably more in the way of "comic relief" and the game played on "barrel horses" was still to be seen in the early years of the present century. This is probably where the name "Polo" came from.

Evidence suggests that the game was played in the 1870's in Leeds with a rugby ball and in Burton-on-Trent where a goal was scored by grounding the ball on the end of the bath, with the goalkeeper standing on the end and allowed to jump onto any player in possession of the soft india rubber ball.

Go Daddy Is A Trailblazer in Safeguarding Customer Data

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. The Go Daddy Group, Inc. network of registrars are the first to back-up all of their customer information with an outside data storage firm under new regulations set forth by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The Registrar Data Escrow (RDE) program is an ICANN initiative designed to protect consumers from losing control of their domain names should a registrar lose its accreditation or go defunct.

Of course, Go Daddy, the global leader in domain registrations, has always backed up its data including the registrant and other contact information through a multi-pronged program that also protects registrants privacy.

Escrowing the data with ICANN, per the new regulations, provides an additional layer of security, while also setting a good example for the registrar community.

But number two, how come we don't see you people running and foaming at the mouth about the scandals circulating about the Clintons right now with the uranium mine that Bill Clinton opened the door for and got a hundred-million-dollar gift to his library? She said to me, "Oh, I didn't hear about that.
