Righetti, St. Joseph hoops open at home

Basketball fans of the Santa Maria Valley won't have to venture far for first-round CIF Southern Section playoff action this coming week, as both Righetti High and St. Joseph scored first-round home games for each of their boys and girls basketball teams.

The highest seed of the bunch, Ron Barba's St. Joseph girls, take their No. 4 ranking into the Division II-A playoffs on Thursday night against Glendora, the No. 3 entry from the Sierra League. Tipoff at Hofschulte Gym is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live by the Santa Maria Times and Lompoc Record on the Times' web site at www.santamariatimes.com.

At the same time across the street, Righetti's girls open Division III-AA action as the No. 13 seed with a home game against Torrance, with the winner facing a second-round road trip Saturday to No.

Obama Che Guevara Flag ‘Scandal’

That's the Cuban flag with the image of Ernesto Che Guevara superimposed on it. It's tacked onto the wall of an office in Barack Obama's Houston campaign headquarters. An office belonging, apparently, to a low level staffer who's in charge of setting up the office.

I'm immediately reminded of a line from Charlie Daniels' breakout hit, Uneasy Rider: "I betchya he's even got a commie flag tacked up on the wall inside of his garage." The classic response: "I ain't even got a garage, you can call home and ask my wife!"

But I digress.

Here are the headlines of some select reactions to the Obama flag flap:

Ed Morrissey: "A Flag Obama Supporters Salute?" Charles Johnson: "Che Guevara Flags in Obama's Houston Office" Texas Communists For Obama (Apparently They Were Out of Himmler) Matt Bramanti: "Obama office adores psychotic Marxist thug" Ed Driscoll: "Sixties Radical Chic, Frozen In Amber" Curt@Flopping Aces and Don Surber weigh in with "Che Obama" Michael Goldfarb: "Che You Can Believe In"

Morrissey is simultaneously fair and not:

Does Obama know his Houston supporters honor a terrorist in his campaign office? I'm sure he doesn't.

Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)

That's exactly why the CDA Press will never break stories like these. They will never invest in giving their reporters the support and resources to do investigative stories. But they'll pick yours up on the AP, and you can take that to the bank. (DFO: Bingo)

*Editor Steve Smith told me a few minutes ago that our pursuit of the e-mails between Prosecutor Bill Douglas and Marina Kalani has cost the newspaper about $20,000 to date -- and we'll probably spend that much in the next coupla weeks pursuing the latest e-mail scandal in the prosecutor's office.

*Bayview Herb called to say his Internet access is down, too. Has the Kootenai County commissioners office ordered Time Warner to quit providing access to Huckleberries Online? Just kidding. I think.

Torsell: Court swayed by bias

On Sept. 26, 2007, a Centre County jury convicted Torsell of vehicular homicide and aggravated assault while driving under the influence, and Centre County Judge Thomas Kistler sentenced him to nearly six years in prison.

"[Stidd's] family wanted him to have his day in court as well," Centre County Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane said.

Keith McClellan, a Torsell family friend who was in the courtroom the first day of the trial, testified that he noticed the jury members' "furtive glances" toward Stidd as he was wheeled from the courtroom about 10 feet from the closest juror.

"I noticed that Aaron Stidd had been wheeled to the front. There were a number of people milling around him," McClellan said.

Referring to the accident as "a murder that didn't happen," Sloane said he believes the jury was burdened more with sympathy for Torsell, adding that in Stidd's hour in the courtroom, he "looked surprisingly well, relative to what he had been through."

Sloane also cited a note signed unanimously by jurors, asking Kistler to be lenient with Torsell's sentencing.

Too cool for schoolies

Students who volunteer must make a commitment that embraces the whole of their year 12. They pledge to raise the money for their airfares and expenses and enough money to cover the cost of building the houses and classroom.

The members of this year's group have been industrious. Daniel Rodway, 18, was the guest speaker at a dinner arranged by his uncle and aunt, Peter and Nicole Rodway. They held it in their home and guests paid $50 a couple. Money went towards building a new house.

Before they flew out of Melbourne after their VCE exams, the students raised $20,000.

Many of Daniel's mates headed to Queensland as he boarded the flight to India for his first overseas adventure.

"The idea of travelling and seeing a foreign country attracted me more," he said.

Digg sale to Microsoft or Google imminent: report

The website has been working with investment bank Allen & Co. on a sale for several months, but a deal is now imminent, according to the influential technology blog TechCrunch.

Citing an unnamed source close to the deal, TechCrunch said there are four companies looking at Digg's books: two of them are large news and media companies, while Google and Microsoft are the other two.

Digg is prepared to accept less than the $300 million US that Allen & Co. was seeking last year, with Google likely to bid up to $225 million, the report said.

Microsoft would likely offer less than Google because part of Digg's revenue comes from an advertising deal the site signed with the software company last year.

The two companies are expected to engage in a bidding war over the website, which ranks news stories according to how many votes they receive from visitors.

Creating a lasting impression

One recent week, her calendar was booked with more than 70 hours of appointments, meetings and tasks.

District officials say her trademark focus and drive will be needed more than ever during her final months on the job.

She wants her successor to inherit the district with no unfinished projects.

Part of it is the superintendent's desire for closure, but, mostly, it's about leaving a mark.

"It's leaving a legacy," Cowan said. "I want mine to be that the Auburn School District is a great organization that is running well."

A meticulous leader

Colleagues say Cowan is a persistent leader who goes out of her way to understand the ins and outs of her schools, which takes her out of the office and into schools and homes.

Ron Paul Newsletters Become Campaign Fodder

You know, often times (especially of late), I ponder if the Germans in 1933 were as apathetic to the foreboding storm that a minority voice surely tried to articulate. When the purge of this nation arrives (and it's coming), I'll remember those who willfully steered the masses into complacency.
