Daggers Bar Sikhs From Meeting Pope

The leader of the Roman Catholic church is heading an interfaith meeting on April 17, in an effort to extend peace.

While Sikh representatives had been invited to attend, authorities were concerned about the security risk to Pope Benedict XVI.

The secret service will not allow the Sikhs to go near the Pope while they carry a kirpaan, a dagger worn as part of their traditional garb.

The World Sikh Council-America Region said in a statement the service "refused to accommodate the Sikh requirement of the kirpaan."

No cash, no sweat as firms swop goods online

Barter, that age-old form of trade, is heating up here, with the Internet as a modern-day matchmaker.

A multimillion-dollar business has mushroomed online for mainly small businesses to exchange goods and services.

Two online brokerages here raked in close to $4 million in transactions this year and membership is booming.

One member is beauty salon owner Daisy Leng, who this year saved $2,800 on advertising and computer software, which she paid for with her beauty products instead of cash.

'The savings are very important to a small setup like mine,' said Ms Leng, now a regular barter trader.

Another local set-up, accounting software company A2000 Solutions, saved $10,000 on printing by redeeming credits earned from selling accounting software in a barter trade.

Chef's hopes for county's food scene's future

HAMPSHIRE could become one of Britain's great culinary centres, according one of the world's top chefs Raymond Blanc got a taste for Winchester yesterday as he prepared for the opening of his new restaurant in the city.

Locally sourced watercress smoothies will be among the delicacies served up at Brasserie Blanc when it opens next week.

During his visit, Blanc went to Alresford's famous watercress beds in search of ingredients for his Winchester menu.

Blanc, who is known for his ethical approach to cooking, told the Daily Echo he hopes to incorporate plenty of Hampshire produce into his dishes.

"Hampshire could become one of the great food counties in Great Britain," said Blanc, whose Oxford restauraunt Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons was a training ground for many top chefs.

Wisconsin Sports Spectacular

It showed a LOT of disrespect for the officials when he KNEW that they had to make the last snap. Undoubtedly he's been on the other side of that situation before. I can maybe understand in the moment he forgot, and started to go out onto the field, but when he continued out there and shook Coughlin's hand, and then goes into the locker room when his team had to stay out there and see the last snap and the Giants celebration, that was wrong. It took something away from the last snap of the Super Bowl, which I always see as a classic moment when the winning team has the ball and is running out the clock. .

Hip-Hop Rumors: Ray-J / Kay Slay! Update on Dr. Donda West! Paris ...

Here are some quickies since most of the rumors are from yesterday, earlier today and stuff.

What's this madness I hear? Baby Sham, Rah Digga, Rampage and Spliff Starr are no longer Flipmode? They are now called…The Famous Millionaire Squad (FMS).

I think with the talk of Foxy Brown getting out of jail early it was only natural that her wig get pushed back… Her album is now delayed until Feb of 08.

Juelz Santana is also supposedly going to drop in Feb of 08 with a new album! AYE!

Congrats to Jay-Z on hitting that No. 1 spot. Peace out Elvis! He sold 433k, Chris Brown pushed 301k and Cassidy squeeked in the Top 10 with 67k sold.

Ohmigod! Social networkers just can't take it any more!

General Social networking

Guest post: Chris Matyszczyk parses the latest numbers from ComScore on social network activity.

While looking for something that amused me and stopped me from replying to the likeness quiz invitation (and seventy others) from lonely Japanese friends on Facebook, I stumbled upon some numbers from ComScore via Creative Capital.

They seem to suggest that social networking might have suffered something of a peak. Since October, MySpace seems to have lost 3 million unique visitors. And while Facebook's numbers still appear to be going up, they're creeping rather than leaping.

Nike Invitational Day One

The evening session held room for just two distance events, but the Ladies managed to make history in one of those events. In the meet-opening swim, the 800-yard freestyle relay, a University of Kansas quartet set the Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium record with a time of 7:29.42. Kenyon's entry in the same event placed third with a time of 7:30.78, which was a new College record. The Ladies responsible for that time were Lauren Brady (Tyngsboro, MA/Phillips Exeter), Tina Ertel (Halle, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle), Rebecca Wenzlau (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto Senior), and Danielle Arad (Yorba Linda, CA/Tarbut V'Torah). They erased the old Kenyon mark of 7:33.38 set at the 2004 Division III national championship meet. It went without saying that the time was also good for automatic qualification into this season's NCAA DIII Championship.

New guidelines for schools warn of online dangers

William Fralin, R-Roanoke, sponsored the measure.

The department prepared a 43-page manual that contains recommendations and cautions for school administrators, teachers and parents, as well as resources for information about online safety and potential threats to children.

"We're really happy to have this in place," said Lan Neugent, the state assistant superintendent for technology. "We think that it's a great step forward."

The report, which was published last month, contains several pages of Web-based links to sources covering topics such as filtering, instant messaging and identity theft.

The cover has an ominous image of adult-size hands reaching through a computer screen toward a frightened-looking child behind a keyboard.

Fralin said the guidelines will help parents and teachers better safeguard children, who often possess more sophisticated knowledge about computers and the Internet than adults.

Travel-Spring break: Beaches, parties, slopes, and more

NEW YORK (AP) — Spring break can mean partying in Cancun or volunteering in New Orleans. But it can also mean late-season skiing or even birdwatching. Here are some spring break ideas.

BOOKING: You get the best value and choice booking three to four months ahead. But you can still plan plenty of last-minute trips. Flying on weekdays and staying four rather than seven days increases your last-minute options for flights and lodging, according to Amanda Webb of STA Travel.

Most college spring breaks fall between March 8 and 22. Not surprisingly, that's when airfare peaks, according to Farecast.com, a travel search site. The Web site's research found fares average $294 to Las Vegas, $270 to Orlando, $314 to Miami, and $350-$500 for Mexico and the Caribbean. Farecast.com says if you're not bound to the college calendar, you'll save money vacationing at the end of February or in April.

Verizon Business Hits Bullseye With New System for Texas Hunting and ...

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The state's more than 2.1 million licensed hunters and anglers, who constitute one of the largest hunting and fishing populations in the nation, are now able to obtain licenses more quickly and conveniently, using a state-of-the-art system deployed by Verizon Business for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The system upgrade was provided under an existing Verizon Business contract with the agency.

Verizon Business worked with the state to upgrade from an existing point- of-sale system to a leading-edge, completely Web-based automated sales system for processing hunting and fishing licenses in the Lone Star State. The underlying network and existing data centers have also been upgraded.

Texas issues about 2.1 million hunting and fishing licenses annually and an additional 600,000 items including stamps, permits, tags and commercial licenses.
