phpBB3 takes giant strides from predecessor

As the world gets smaller, security threats and spam seem only to grow. PhpBB is the open source Internet Forum package that underlies a majority of the online forums on the Internet and its creators take their motto "creating communities" very seriously. All communities need to interact freely and safely, and although a long time coming, the latest release, phpBB3, has several increased security measures, as well as enhanced collaboration features and mobile optimisation.

Computerworld Australia catches up with some key players behind the software: Henry Sudhof, Adam Reyher and Meik Sievertsen. They discuss the development process they use, the latest phpBB release and what they are doing to address the growing wave of spam and security threats.

Is there any way to guage how many people use phpBB?

Henry Sudhof: For Open Source software that is a very difficult question to answer.

What to do about gold stocks?

Gold stocks may have further to fall; updates on current stock selections. Below is an extract from a commentary originally posted at www.speculative-investor.com on 16th December 2007. What to do? In the 26th November Weekly Update, with the HUI at around 430, we wrote the following: "Our expectation is that the upward trends in gold and gold stocks will resume following the completion of a fairly normal correction, but at the same time we are constantly on the lookout for developments that could turn a normal correction into a large one. Unfortunately, prices tend to move so quickly in the markets these days that selling after evidence emerges that things have changed for the worse will often result in selling near a short-term bottom. This means that precautionary steps need to be taken when prices are relatively high.

CHS assistant principal dies in morning wreck

Pritchett broke the news and discussed efforts to meet anticipated counseling needs in a brief meeting with teachers and staff before the start of school. Teachers shared the news of the wreck with students at the start of first period. Social studies teacher and head basketball coach Jeff Cody taught with Findley and described her as a professional who was dedicated to CHS and the students she served."She was a true servant, and that's what made her special," Cody said. "She will be missed."Students also were also shaken by Findley's death. "I think there's a lot of shock," said Student Council President Will Snider. "Nobody expects something like this. She gave us so much support. She was always nice. I never heard a bad word spoken about her among the student body, which is pleasing, considering her role as an assistant principal, which is a tough position."She was always funny and extremely nice to every one of us.

Coaches discuss fairness of tournament site

New year, same debate. With the Mountain West Conference Basketball Championships looming, Monday's teleconference involving the league's coaches was dominated by the near-annual debate about the fairness of UNLV hosting the conference tournament. The exact answers varied, but -- especially with five new coaches on the scene -- all pointed towards further discussion in the offseason about finding a better plan."Unfortunately, until things change, the automatic (NCAA Tournament) qualifier is the conference tournament winner," New Mexico coach Steve Alford said. "And that's why I think it's very, very important for our league to really look closely at what we're doing with our league tournament, because having it at a host school, there's not any kind of balance or anything fair to that for the other eight teams in the league."Alford, in his first year at the helm for the Lobos, has been the most vocal about the situation and has made his comments public and very clear from Day One.He coached in the Big Ten at Iowa for the last eight seasons, where the conference tournament alternates between Chicago and Indianapolis, Ind.

BIG BROTHER - VICTOR RILES BB HOUSEMATES

Victor's treatment of his circus performer sister Emilia is beginning to wind up his Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack housemates. The 19-year-old elder brother demonstrated love for his sibling by demanding that she make him a steak in the small hours. She refused, prompting him to observe that "loving sister means selfless idiot", and in the end it was Amy who had to meet his culinary needs.Jeremy declared him "pretty evil" and, after another argument yesterday, Nathan told him: "There are four guys treating your sister better than you."Perhaps Victor has his mind on other matters, as demonstrated by a conversation about love and girls early on Saturday morning."The thing is when you're in love you don't fancy anyone else, I think girls in here are fit but I don't fancy them," he said."You're like a magnet to women when you get a standing ovation, I get like six or seven numbers a night if I want to."Calista's reaction to his topless venture across the bathroom, which mainly involved shrieking with excitement, certainly backs up the first half of his claim.

US seizes domain name of Spanish company selling Cuba trips

The United States has often presented itself as the guardian of Internet free speech. China may censor the Internet, and otherwise-civilized nations such as Germany or France may attempt to block what they view as unacceptable material, but the United States of America likes to think of itself as a place that doesn't censor people online... unless you happen to own a foreign travel business that offers trips to Cuba. Under such circumstances, as Steve Marshall discovered, all bets are off.

Steve Marshall is a British citizen living in Spain. For the past decade, he has operated an online travel agency that specializes in selling trips to Cuba to various European nationals. Marshall operated a number of Cuban-specific web sites, including several that focused specifically on the literary and historical aspects of Cuba, and maintained them in English, French, and Spanish.

Wikia Search to offer first peek next week

Wikia Search, a community-driven search engine, will get its first public preview on Monday, according to co-founder Jimmy Wales.

In an e-mail sent to the Wikia Search mailing list on December 24, Wales wrote that he aims to make the initial version of the search tool available in alpha form. "We want to run over the system with help from people to complain about what is broken," he wrote.

Wikia Search, which aims to allow people to contribute to how pages are ranked and to edit search results, will have open-source search algorithms and application program interfaces. The search platform includes the Grub search project, acquired by Wikia in July, which employs user-donated distributed processing power to crawl the Web.

Wales, who also co-founded user-generated online encyclopedia Wikipedia, hopes Wikia Search will eventually rival other search companies by making the way in which search results are arrived at more "transparent."

"The desire to collaborate and support a transparent and open platform for search is clearly deeply exciting to both open source and businesses," Wales said in a statement in July.

French high court thumps Google Video

A French high court has added some extra spice to the legal debate over online video sharing.

In mid-October, the High Court of the First Instance of Paris issued a ruling against Google Video after it was sued by a Paris-based film company called Zadig Productions. Naturally, Zadig was peeved that Google was hosting one of its films, and the court slapped the web giant for copyright infringement.
