| ATHLETICS: Former Olympic ace inspires students
FORMER Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Olympic athlete Tony Jarrett spent an afternoon in an Enfield classroom last week to pass on tips to sports students. Jarrett, who competed in the 110m hurdles at the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000, Atlanta 1996, Barcelona 1992 and Seoul 1988, was born in Enfield. And the former sprint ace, who won medals at the World, European and Commonwealth Games, returned to his home town to give a talk to sports students at Enfield College. The 39-year-old would probably have enjoyed even more success in his career had it not been for GB teammate Colin Jackson, with his only individual gold medal coming at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Jarrett, who is now an athletics coach, shared his experiences as a professional athlete with the students at the Hertford Road college, as well as running an exclusive practical coaching session.

UK MPs reject referendum on EU Treaty
Brown has been under severe pressure from opposition parties and campaign groups to hold a popular vote on the treaty ever since he signed the text last December (seeEurActiv 21/01/08). Meanwhile, parliamentary committees have already been discussing the treaty on an issue-by-issue basis for a month. Opposition leader David Cameron said the decision means "people feel cheated and cynical because promises made are promises being broken". He was referring to commitments by Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats to hold a referendum on the abandoned Constitutional Treaty in their manifestos for the 2005 general election. The issue split the Liberal Democrat party, whose leader Nick Clegg had ordered his MPs to abstain from yesterday's vote. Yet aquarter of Lib Dem MPs defied the orderand voted in favour of a referendum, with three frontbenchers resigning to do so.

This week, along with our co-counsel, EFF filed a motion for judgment on the pleadings asking a U.S. District Court judge to throw out a copyright infringement suit brought by talk show host Michael Savage against the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Savage sued CAIR in December, alleging that CAIR infringed the copyright in his show when it posted on its web site brief excerpts from Savage's radio program in order to criticize Savage's remarks. Savage also added a federal racketeering claim stemming from that alleged copyright infringement. CAIR's use of the radio program excerpts is, of course, protected under the fair use doctrine. The Copyright Act specifically makes clear that third parties may utilize copyrighted works for purposes of commentary or criticism, as CAIR did in this case.

LegCo Members Ask RTB For Better Local Coverage
YB Awang Haji Mohd Shafiee bin Ahmad said, "RTB has been allocated a budget of $52,808,811 for 2008/2009. There is only one crew in the Belait District. Being the largest district in Brunei, how can a crew make a good coverage in the district. Is there any plan to outsource to ensure comprehensive coverage?" Minister of Energy YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya, in response, said, "Some activities that RTB are unable to cover in the Belait District are given to outsiders. The quality may not be good but it's enough to fulfil the objectives of covering all activities in the country." YB Pehin Kapitan Lela DiRaja Dato Paduka Awang Gob Kin Chin, meanwhile, asked if RTB will be producing programmes in Chinese language, given that the radio station is doing so.
