Cary private equity fund pours money into film and TV projects
While the Triangle is hardly Tinseltown, local residents are throwing a surprisingly respectable amount of money at film and TV entertainment projects. One such investor is 43-year-old Dale Scales, co-managing director of a small private equity fund put together by Cary's OBX Capital Group, whose other managing director is Reed Clevenger. Scales' fund totals $33 million and invests in a variety of ventures, from technology to manufacturing to entertainment. One project is "Bar Starz," a $9 million film that's fully funded by OBX Capital and is co-produced by Scales and his company. .

MTB News and Notes: A conversation with Greg Minnaar; New power at ...
It's been a roller coaster year for Greg Minnaar. The South African downhiller opened the season riding his country's Absa Cape Epic as a celebrity participant in the mixed team category (he finished fourth). Minnaar then spent the 2007 World Cup season nipping at the heels of reigning world champ Sam Hill. But a badly timed shoulder dislocation suffered while training in France, Germany derailed his campaign. Seemingly recovered, Minnaar looked to be capable of dethroning Hill at the World Cup round at Mont-Ste-Anne, Quebec, and at the world championships in Fort William, Scotland. But in both races Minnaar's shoulder painfully popped out of the socket midway through the run, forcing the South African to cool his jets. In Fort William, Minnaar hit the deck after his shoulder dislocated, breaking his shoulder blade.
REMEMBERING YESTERYEAR: Benjamin Long Rand's home has lots of history
In the original photographs one can see that there was a second story transom window located in the middle portion of this bay. It appears that this window was glazed with ornate leaded glass. Today, there is no window in this location. Also typical of the Queen Anne style is the polygonal tower just behind the front corner that rises from the ground level. The front of this home has a unique arched window in the cellar that may have been used to move coal or oil into the cellar for heating. There is an interesting folklore rumor surrounding this window. Allegedly there was a time in the Rand Co. history when their workers were attempting to unionize, which the Rands opposed as they did not want unions to be part of their business. It is said that someone, presumably an employee, fired a warning shot into this basement window in an attempt to pressure the Rand's into unionizing.

Between the Lines Latest Post | Last 10 Posts | Archives Jotspot is back (as Google Sites); It's still a wiki Posted in: General Web Technology Google Enterprise 2.0 Google acquired Jotspot in 2006 and then let it disappear. But the company didn't totally give up on the hosted wiki application and has rebranded it Google Sites. As Dan Farber notes, Google Sites is another cog in that Google Apps suite. Rafe Needleman finds it curious that Google Sites doesn't mention the word wiki anywhere. That observation is keen. Perhaps wiki is too geeky. Perhaps Google thought a name like Google Sites was better than Jotspot. Frankly, none of this rebranding works all that well. It's still not clear what Google Sites is about judging from its name.
Computer Model Developed For Osteoporosis Diagnostics
This method provides more meaningful results than pure density measurements (DXA). After two years we demonstrated a mean increase of 30% in bone strength." Another medication, already available on the market for some time and known as an ‘antiresorptive’, employs the strategy of preventing or delaying bone loss in osteoporosis patients. There are plans to continue these investigations by comparing the effect of ‘antiresorptives’ with that of ‘anabolic’ drugs in patients with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Read the complete text! Rochester's Hills' State of the City address
Good Evening. I want to welcome you to the 2008 State of the City Address and thank you for the opportunity to update the community on the status and condition of our fine City. I want to personally thank all of you for attending this event in our newest facility and sincerely thank all of the members of the Department of Public Services who have helped us put this evening together. We have never held the address outside of city hall but I felt it would be a great opportunity to showcase our newest facility to the people who own it, our residents. This required a tremendous amount of effort from a large number of city employees and I sincerely appreciate it. Don't complain though, if you think this is different, next year I want to hold the State of the City -- underwater! I also want to recognize some very important people in the room tonight.
Automated Killer Robots ‘Threat to Humanity’: Expert
If you murdered your neighbor and stole his property could that be described as 'winning". When you start out with an evil premise there is no way to turn it respectable. I am disturbed at the continuing dehumanization of this murdering. The same stuff they use on them can be used on us. Most of the people they are killing are innocent. They do have the right to defend themselves against imperial occupiers. Anyone who opposes them they call terrorists. Are you a terrorist? The real terorists are the ones who launched this illegal war based on lies. .
No answers yet in death of 5-year-old
The question has rolled over in her mind and through Kayleigh's lips so many times: What happened to Nia? Sanchez met Carenard because they were the foster mothers of twin girls. Nia's identical sister, Jayvyn, lived in Beacon with Carenard and the Sanchezes were in nearby Fishkill. After 19 months, the mothers decided the twins should live together. Nia and Jayvyn were born prematurely. As infants, they had myriad health issues. Everyone felt Carenard was better suited to care for them. When the twins were reunited, they flourished, Sanchez said. Saying goodbye wasn't easy, but Carenard welcomed the Sanchezes to remain in Nia's life. The families celebrated birthdays and picnicked together. The morning Sanchez received the call was an awful moment. She collapsed to the floor when she heard the police officer say that Nia died.
